When I plant an amaryllis bulb in mid November what I am really doing is planning beauty, hope and magic in a pot of peat moss. Then I water it every week and watch it intently, waiting for the first sign of a green sprout... a harbinger of sorts. Once the sprout appears it is as if time quickens... each day the plant grows by an inch or more.
Then one day, you wake up to a bit of color peeking out from the green bud as it begins to mature, and in a few days you will behold the most magnificent bloom balanced on a long tubular stalk. Like a majestic royal red scepter stuck in a little pot sitting proudly on our coffee table, our amaryllis holds court at all our December gatherings.
Silky red petals folded back into a trumpet shape with fluffy golden pillows of pollen on fleshy stamens popping out from the flower centre... pure magic! An amaryllis brings life to a cold wintery day... and night.

We watched a DVD the other night on 'Hildegard of Bingen', born in Germany in 1098 she became a Medieval mystic, visionary, and Abbess. She wrote numerous books on music, health, nutrition, medicine, and spirituality... quite an accomplishment for a woman during her time in history.

Her particular slant on how the nuns in her convent could dress on special occasions (they often wore jewelry, and white dresses with their long hair flowing) caused quite a stir... perhaps that is one of the reasons she attracted a number of wealthy, women to join her convent.

Watching the video got me contemplating the arts in general... and my thoughts soon drifted to the beautiful drawings of Rembrandt and Leonardo, which gave me the idea to put pen to paper and create some art.

I hear it is good for you...

When looking at old drawings I love to get in close and check out the subtle nuances of the artist's mark making... fun little twists and turns of the drawing instrument which create the character of the work. The reference photo for this one was taken at the Highland's Community Garden, in our neighbourhood. You might remember the oil painting I did last fall of a sunflower (called Highland Sun) from the same stand of majestic blooms...

I am starting a series of pen and ink drawings... most will be a finished size of 6x9 (or 9x6), on 140 lb acid free hot-pressed watercolor paper, with a 1/2 inch edge outside of the artwork for framing purposes.

I am happy to report that my email is back up and running! It certainly is hard to believe how much we (read I) have come to depend on email to communicate with the world and do business.

This poppy painting is hanging in our home. Vibrant orange petals like wispy flames dancing around a dusting of electric blue pollen... a sort of whirling dervish of creative impulses.

My head is swimming with ideas for a series of larger paintings, which I will be setting aside for shows. The majority of blog postings this year will be drawings... some pen & ink... some mixed media, etc.

Stay tuned for some twists and turns... you never know what may show up in a post this year.

You may remember my fascination with tin-foil and the series of cutlery paintings I created a few months back? Various pieces placed on tin-foil catching the light, creating little vignettes of shimmering silver... they seem to glow in the dark.

The series is displayed side by side in my studio/gallery room, a line-up of silver reflections to brighten up a dull grey snowy day. I can envision a grouping of them hung next to stainless steel appliances, or a glass dinning table, or displayed along a hall that leads to the kitchen... Let your imagination be your guide!

I was getting ready my art exhibit at the University Hospital that will be happening this coming December 1, 2011 to January 31, 2012 and had a difficult time selecting the work for the show. Luckily a friend came over and gave me a hand... it is always good to bounce ideas off someone else and have them assist you in the selection process.
Of course there were many paintings that I wanted to set aside for the show, but once you decide on a 'color' theme it is impossible to include certain pieces... no matter how much you like them. So I thought it was time to give this little peach poppy another showing on my blog. Yes, there are many other paintings that did not work with the theme of the coming show, but such is life.

The selection process reminded me of choosing a dress to wear to a party. You know you can't wear every dress you like in your closet, even though you wish you could... but, there will be other parties!

While I was making dinner the other night I came across a large bag of green onions in one of the crispers, and it reminded me that I had not posted this painting. The red elastics are what attracted me to these particular onions. The majority of stores I shop in use blue elastics to secure their onions, which made the red seem very 'exotic'... so I slipped a few (okay... three) bunches into my basket.

Placing them on a red/orange cloth accentuated the green stems and crisp white flesh, while thick passages of oil paint suggest the texture of the roots. Painted larger than life they will make a fun addition to any kitchen!

We have a large, well used community garden beside our community hall here in the Highlands, within the city of Edmonton. The local residents are offered the opportunity to rent a small plot of land on which too grow some veggies or flowers. For a nominal fee you can grow some extra potatoes, cultivate a 'cutting' flower bed or just experiment with some new veggies, while sharing some gardening and community spirit with other like minded people in the Highlands. Although I have not taken advantage of this opportunity I do make a point of wandering over there now and then to drool over the tomatoes... and snap a few photos.

There are some spectacular sunflowers growing along one of the fences, and it turned out that the young woman who was watering her veggies was the green thumb who planted these healthy giants. I snapped a few quick pics of this sunny yellow beauty with the curly petals and luscious green leaves... but forgot to ask the gardener's name so that I could give her credit in my blog.

Thanks to 'Ms. Green Thumb' for planting the tall, healthy sunflowers along the fence by the driveway. I am sure I am not the only one who walked by to admire them... although I might be the only one who painted one of them.

Green onions are so much fun to paint! Aromatic white bulbs topped with fuzzy root ends attached to slender green stalks bundled together with blue elastic bands... placed on a piece of red cloth. Rather pretty, in a 'veggie' sort of way.

Have you ever wondered why the elastic bands are always blue?

This painting needs to be seen again. I posted it a little while ago, but whenever I walk past my gallery room in my home-studio it keeps calling out to me... asking for attention. It looks so beautiful displayed on the easel... all pink and curvy... like a gorgeous satin dress swirled about a model's sleek shoulders, offering the illusion that a strap might fall at any moment and reveal a bit more.

For some reason it makes me think of the John Singer Sargent's painting called 'Madame X'. Not that I think my painting style is like Mr. Sargent, rather, the curves of this pink lily brought to mind the curves of the woman in the black dress.

This Sunflower painting sold the other day and now has a home in Lethbridge, which is in southern Alberta, near the border with the USA. The collector who purchased this piece said that he is drawn to my use of vibrant colors... which goes to show that if you paint what you love it will come through the painting, and that energy will resinate with right person.

Since July 1 is 'Canada Day', I felt it called for a little patriotism and a painting of our flag. I have an ongoing series of smaller flags (12x6) of various countries but wanted to paint a larger square format showing our Canadian Flag from a different perspective. It was fun to paint it flapping in the breeze with strong light and shadow areas, creating a dramatic feel. Sometimes, I think we Canadians need to show our patriotism by flying our beautiful flag a bit more often in our homes or offices...

And there is no better day to start than July 1.

These orange poppies are growing underneath the bird bath in our backyard garden. I painted them larger than life... in reality these blooms are small... but when you have artistic license at your disposal size doesn't matter!

Our birdbath is a very popular spot this summer... a community pool of sorts for the local birds. We think the chickadees are living 'condo' style in a fir tree in our neighbor's yard, and perhaps the 'pool' and 'buffet' (our bird feeder) next door was the selling feature.

The living room sofa is ring side seating for watching the fun through our garden door! Sometimes there are one or two robins splashing around with a small chickadee joining in the fun. Other times there is a line up on the apple tree above, as each bird takes a turn. Often, we have to go out and refill the bath in the middle of the chaos so that the next birds have some water to splash around in as the previous ones have made quite a mess sloshing about! It's fun to watch them fly up into the apple tree afterwards, to dry off and preen themselves. Most of them rub their wet beaks on the branches, either to dry them off, or sharpen them, or both!

One day this spring I even found a bluejay having a bath in a large pail of water we had set out to catch water from a down spout! He needed the deeper pool in order to submerge his whole body, and didn't seem to mind as I walked by.

Who needs video games when nature can be so entertaining.?

When I was a floral designer a number of years ago, we would order a shipment of 'exotics' from Hawaii. The box arrived looking very small for the amount of product that was packed inside. But the growers new just how to wrap and pack their exotic blooms so that they arrived in perfect condition.

Anthurium originated in South America and are members of the Arum family and are cousins to jack-in-the pulpit, calla lilies and split-leafed philodendron plants. They were introduced to Hawaii in 1889 by Samuel M. Damon and flourished in the year round warmth and high humidity. Anthurium enjoy being misted with water when you have them as cut flowers or as a plant in your home, especially if you live in a dry climate... hello Alberta!

The part of the plant we think of as the flower (like the poinsettia) is really brilliantly colored heart shaped thick, waxy bracts; while the true flower is the whitish, green/yellow spathe in the center of each bract. Of course its name comes from the Latin word, 'anthos', meaming flower and 'oura', meaning tail.

These sleek exotic blooms make an artful statement in a modern office or home... whether in a vase, planted in a pot, or dare I say... on a wall.

Guess what we are having for dinner tonight?

I propped these beauties up so that they were leaning on an orange/yellow tea towel that I draped over my tea pot (I know, I know... do I own anything other than orange tea towels?)

Leeks are related to the onion family, but have a sweeter, more sophisticated flavor than their close relatives. Looking like a scallion on steroids, leeks have blueish green leaves which grow in an overlapping fan shape, adding to their decorative appearance. Cultivated since the time of the Ancient Egyptian, leeks were highly prized by the Romans who considered the leek a superior veggie, and the Emperor Nero believed that eating leeks would improve his singing voice.

I'll let you know if I can sing any better after dinner tonight...

I was playing around with my Mac, trying out some of the special effects to create a 'new' version of a popular painting. The original of this painting is black and white oil paint, using this technique it resembles a pen and ink painting with some fuschia enhancements.

I was having lunch with Vincent Van Gogh today. His spirit filled my kitchen via a book by Gerhard Gruitrooy, called 'Van Gogh an appreciation of his art'. His incredible work jumped off the pages... the close up detail of the paint application and brush strokes took my breath away... they were so full of energy that I felt my heart beat a little faster while viewing them. After dining with such an energetic companion I came up stairs to my studio, picked up my brush and let it dance across my canvas.

This 'high key' (lighter tone) painting of blue Iris has an impressionistic feel. I heard Vincent prompting me to be immediate and sure of each stroke as I applied the paint, telling me to enjoy the process and have fun.

I listened.

I have been reading a book on Van Gogh which has excerpts of Vincent's letters to his brother Theo, telling him about his adventures/thoughts on changing the color of some of the elements in his paintings. I was inspired to try something different in the background in this painting of a stargazer lily, and chose golden yellow, after having a look at Vincent's painting called 'Street in Saintes-Marie-de-la-Mer.' The effect with this lily reminds me of gold leaf... the energy of the brush work makes me smile.

I had fun painting this one, can you tell?

The garden centres have many varieties of poppy plants for sale in almost any color you can imagine. I love to go there early in the morning to snap a few reference photos.

Strong sunlight filtered through this deep orange/red poppy's silky petals. The morning light showed all the beautiful folds, wrinkles and lines on her delicate face. Character lines... beauty marks.

This is a repost from a while back, but I just re-read the information and thought it might be fun to post it one more time...

*I promise to have some new paintings very soon... my University courses end next week, (more in September) so I will be free to paint for most of the summer now.

I purchased a set of 3 earth toned tea towels with interesting designs woven into the fabric. (I know, I know, they have some orange in them too...) For this painting I arranged mismatched avocado halves on one of the towels, with the seedless half positioned on a slight slant for a little variety.

Tea towels and artist's oil paint have something in common from their past... the flax plant.

Originally, tea towels (from the 1800's) were woven from linen, a natural fiber from the flax plant stems which was a soft, lint free fabric and the best for drying beautiful English bone china tea sets. Artist's oil paint was originally composted of ground pigment mixed with linseed oil, which is derived from the flax plant. Raw flax oil undergoes a process to add drying agents to it to create linseed oil which is often used in oil paint to decrease dying time.

Interesting that both linen and linseed were prized for their drying abilities...

The oil paint brand that I use is NOT made with linseed oil, my brand, 'M. Graham & Co.' uses walnut oil, so there is less smell to my oil paints and they come out of the tube in a lovely buttery consistency... just perfect for depicting avocado flesh!

We have this rather tall skinny apple tree in our backyard. Right from the beginning, when it was really healthy, this skinny tree did not produce more than about 20 apples a season, and most seasons the count has been about 6 or less. It was saved after a 'fireblight' issue from a nearby crabapple tree, plus pruned a couple of times, but as you can see it is not really shaped like a true apple tree.

Granted, I chose to sketch a bit longer trunk than it really has, and I have left out the complete top growth of leaves... (I was going for the whimsical look), but in reality this tree is a bit of a misfit. Supposedly a Harcourt Apple tree, suited for small spaces, it never really enjoyed its location in our shady back yard.

After withstanding frost cracks, fireblight, low light levels and amateur pruning, it is amazing that it is still living! So I tried to draw it's character. The real story can be read via the interesting imperfections ... scars, cracks and wounds.

Many of you have commented on my avocado paintings. It seems that the thick buttery oil paint that I like to slather on for the soft green flesh appeals to most people... I too, like the texture it creates. But, since I am on a sketching phase at the moment, I felt the need to try my hand (and pen) at 'sketching' an avocado.

Maybe the next one will have a 'watercolor' wash... and will be for sale. Meanwhile, this one stays in my sketch book!

Of course the apron I drew at Fort Edmonton (see yesterday's posting) had another end tied to the clothesline... twirling and swirling in the wind. The thick cotton cloth became a twisted little fabric sculpture, with a touch of whimsy. It made me think of being a child... watching my mother hang the laundry on the line. She would connect all the tea towels, sheets and pillow cases by overlapping the fabric so that only one wooden pin was required to hold two ends together on the line. During the winter the laundry would freeze on the line, and Mom would carry 'cardboard' sheets into the basement to thaw on a make shift line, dripping onto the concrete floor.

I am sure she sometimes felt like she was a pioneer... one clothespin away from tying aprons in knots on a line... just like I found at Fort Edmonton.

Meanwhile back at the Fort... (Fort Edmonton that is) I was scouting out different things to sketch and found a clothesline with an apron tied to it flapping in the breeze, perfect! Or at least it seemed like a good idea at the time... but just try to draw an apron billowing in the wind. The folds become a nightmare, but I loved sketching the detail of the fabric tied onto the line, with one cord twisted into a little spiral shape, while the other one looped into a knot.

Heavy old cotton fabric sewn into an apron, drying on the line... these were days before clothes pins!

I am involved in a 'Plein Air' sketching class for two Saturdays. This past Saturday we went to John Janzen Nature Centre plus Fort Edmonton Park to sketch. I love the sights, sounds and smells of historic Fort Edmonton, it is always a treat to see the volunteers dressed in period costume, re-enacting daily life at one of the first fur trading forts.

Next week we are off to Elk Island Park where the buffalo roam free... yikes! I have been there cross- country skiing in the winter, and we have come across a few buffalo standing near the trail... you let them decide who goes first on the trail! Even as you drive into or out of the park a herd of them may be meandering along the road ahead of your car... again no contest about who gets to cross where... they 'always' get first choice!

I will take my camera along to snap some good close up photos of their massive shaggy fur covered bodies for future paintings, and drawings. Even though we plan on sketching rocks and trees along the lakeshore we may come across a few wild animals who may stand still long enough for a quick sketch...

Needless to say it will be an adventure!

Droopy tulips make for an interesting painting. I like them straight and tall too, but after a few days, as the stems grow a bit, they usually start to droop over the vase, so you need to recut them every couple of days if you want to keep them looking perky! Tulips are the only flower that continue to grow after cutting... which make them a bit of an anomaly in the floral world.

This 'flock' of parrot tulips are was purchased by the same collector who also owns the previous posting of parrot tulips, they both look great in her beautiful home!

Tin foil is a mainstay in my studio. I love the reflections created by objects placed upon it. These Tangelo sections were a pleasure to paint, (and not only because orange is one of my favorite colors)... it was the way the icy blue tones shimmered next to the citrus sections. Warm and cold all at once, sort of like the sensations you experience when you eat a cold ice cream cone on a hot summer day. Now that's living!

Yesterday I visited my friend (and collector) who purchased this piece. She has it hanging in her kitchen and I wanted to share it with you... one more time.

The weather here in Edmonton is gorgeous! Above seasonal temperatures with lots of sun, perfect for the long weekend that is fast approaching. The tulips are starting to bloom in our neighborhood so I think that I had better take full advantage of the weather and get out tomorrow morning for a photo session in some of the local gardens... maybe even venture out to a garden centre or two... before the weekend crowds.

I admit that I love hot colors, and these red tulips with their thick yellow edges made my heart sing... so I had to paint them. They are definitely hot, just like the weather!

This lapis lazuli necklace was placed on the same orange and ochre silk fabric as the necklace from yesterday. I enjoyed rendering the highlights on the flat disc shaped brass beads in the foreground and background of this painting... little bits of gold flecks throughout the stones (which in reality are 'pyrite', false gold) echo these brassy gold tones.

The name Lapis Lazuli comes from the Persian word 'lazhward', meaning blue, but in ancient times lapis lazuli was known as sapphirus, which is the name we use today for blue corundum... sapphire. The astrological sign of lapis is Sagittarius, and this semi-precious stone is believed by some people to benefit the respiratory system, the throat, vocal chords and thymus; which may be why it is connected spiritually to the throat Chakra which vibrates with the color blue.

Food for thought...

Lapis Lazuli has a long history in the world of art. An expensive natural mineral, this blue stone was ground into a fine powder, washed repeatedly to remove impurities and then mixed with a drying oil to create oil paint. Vermeer used it extensively. Unlike many of his contemporaries who used the much cheaper azurite, he liked to paint with this more expensive blue, and his patrons liked the prestige of knowing their purchases contained the 'real thing'.

In the 1800's a synthetic blue pigment replaced this expensive mineral in the creation of ultramarine blue paint. Whenever I squeeze some ultramarine blue onto my palette I think of Vermeer, and realize how lucky I am to be able to use it whenever I want.

Lapis lazuli was, and still is, a popular choice in jewelry design. The necklace above, which I painted laying on orange and ochre stripped silk fabric was from a previous post, but I wanted to let you see it again.

Lauren contacted me back in April of this year, asking me for some bio information because she was using me and my art work for a special project for her high school art class. I must say I was very flattered to think that this young woman chose to recreate one of my paintings. When she asked for my bio info I directed her to my website so that she would have a bit of fun info to share with her class. In return I asked Lauren if I could share some of her info on my site, and she agreed.

Lauren Peck is a Grade 11 student at Glace Bay High School, in Glace Bay Nova Scotia. She loves to paint, and from the look of this excellent acrylic version she painted of 'Pure Elegance', I think she is well on her way to creating a career in the arts... if she so chooses.

I would also like to send a special thank you to the art instructor at Glace Bay High School for suggesting this project; what a creative and innovative approach to teaching art!

My version is sold, and I assume Lauren is keeping hers... I wouldn't be surprised to hear that her mother has already claimed her beautiful painting for their home... "Lauren's Lovely Lily."

Whether you enjoy one cooked, then eaten leaf by leaf with butter, or made into a dip and enjoyed with other veggies, you can't beat its rich, delicious texture. A real party pleaser, with a touch of elegance.

I liked the way this artichoke is propped against a strong red fabric backdrop with its head resting on the stripes... showing it is comfortable in any setting... elegant or everyday, kind of like Denby China!

Do you play chess? My first attempt was a few years ago, and perhaps it is time to play some more. A friend gave us a wonderful wooden chess set about 4 years ago, after I lamented about not asking my father if I could have his set.

It seems (from my research) that chess has been around since about the 2nd century B.C.E. and originated in China, then travelled to India and on to Persia. Some say it was invented by a woman between four or five thousand years ago in India...

The Moors brought it to Spain in the 8th century and Chess spread to Europe. Chess supposedly represents the universe according to ancient Indian mysticism, with the four sides being the four elements of fire, water, earth and air. The rules have not changed too much over the years, although the the chess pieces are often known by different names in different countries. The European contribution to chess came around 1000 A.C.E. when they introduced the checkered board to assist the eye.

It is a game of skill, and there is no luck involved (I can vouch for that!). The first international chess tournament was held in London in 1851, and was won by a German professor of mathematics. Chess is the national sport of Russia and is played more than football, which must account for their superiority in the game. "Practice makes Perfect."

This painting was not easy to do. Although I enjoyed trying to copy a Morandi painting it was more difficult than I expected. I can see numerous differences in the two pieces, but the exercise was worth the effort. I will keep my painting as a reminder that it is good to try and copy a famous artist now and then in order to see if you can 'feel' your way into their work.

One thing I will do, is find some objects that speak to me and set up my own 'Morandi Style' still life to paint. The muted color palette was fun to use, and quite different from my usual vibrant color choice. An interesting discovery I made while painting this piece was that even when we try to copy another artist, it will never be an 'exact' copy because our anatomy is different, which accounts for the way our fingers and hands work, which in turn helps to identify our signature brush work, drawing, etc.

'That little flick of the wrist makes all the difference...'

I am taking a drawing class at the University and we are studying Giorgio Morandi, (1890-1964). So I thought I would try copying some of his work. I can see that my graphite sketch is out a bit here and there... if I was trying to create an exact copy... but I am happy with 'close'. And besides, our instructor has banned all erasers in the class... what he really said was "using erasers in my class to 'correct' any drawing mistakes is a no no."

Morandi's work has a bit of a rough, yet elegant feel, and he restricted his subjects almost exclusively to still life work, with the exception of a few landscapes. His favorite colors were gentle and delicate tones and his contemplative still life setups were usually a few plain bottles, cups, bowls and jars, which he always arranged anew. He would physically paint all the clear bottles gray, cream or white solid tones for his setups, rather than use any clear glass with reflective qualities, as he seemed to want all the objects to be more 'solid', with no reflections. Certain shapes appealed to him and he kept painting many of the same objects over and over... dust and all.

I think tomorrow I am going to try either copying one of his still life paintings for fun, or if I can find some nice shapes around the house, I will set up my own 'Morandi inspired' still life, (without dust).

I must admit that I can certainly understand why he liked to reuse these shapes... drawing them put me into a 'zen zone'. There was a feeling of becoming one with these elegance, simple shapes and muted colors.

'Woven' is the largest paintings so far, in my wicker series, and is the most dramatic of the series to date. Choosing a name for a painting can sometimes be a difficult decision... but 'Woven' suits this painting on so many levels.

The symbolism of the name starts with the canvas itself... woven cotton fabric stretched over a wooden frame and coated in white gesso. Thick, creamy oil paint was brushed onto this canvas into the woven pattern of the wicker trunk I have been using as a painting prop.

Lines and shapes intertwine, forming the image of reeds woven tightly together, creating a container... for storage. Some reeds are thicker than others, but all sizes are useful and each length of the plant fiber snuggles up close to the next one to increase the strength of the finished product... the wicker trunk.

A place to store precious belongings, a place to keep them safe. A 'Hope Chest' of sorts...

Here is the fourth painting in my series of wicker. This view conjured up visions of ocean waves undulating, with a few white caps forming here and there, as Ada (my husband's mother) crossed the Atlantic on her voyage to Canada in the 50's. Riding those waves on a huge ocean-liner must have felt very safe, as she left her familiar world for 'her new world' in the wild west of Canada. Below deck, tucked somewhere in the luggage compartment, was this wicker trunk... riding the high seas, packed full with secret dreams and sewing notions.

This is the third painting in the series. Each painting is created from a unique view of the wicker trunk I mentioned in the two previous postings. As I photographed the trunk (I have about 300 photos of it now) from various angles I began to think about the years of dust collected in the grooves and cracks of the weave. I know there must be traces of dust from Vienna, but who knows where the trunk was constructed... there could be bits of dust from other countries in Europe too. Dust plus memories woven into each strand by each person who worked on it, from the person who harvested the reeds to the craftsman who bent them into shape, and finally to the merchant who sold the wicker trunk to Ada's family in Austria.

The subtle, often seemingly insignificant connections in life.

I have been exploring texture and line in my work lately, as you can see from this painting, and the fabric paintings from a few postings ago, (in fact I have a special project I have been working on regarding fabric).

'Wicker Dreams I' is a semi-abstract painting of a close up section of a wonderful old wicker trunk we inherited from my husband's mother. It is one of the trunks she used to transport her possessions from Austria to Canada, when she immigrated here in the 50's. Packed with clothing and linens this wicker trunk also contained dreams... dreams of a new start in Canada after the war... dreams of the future in a new country... dreams of adventure in western Canada. Dreams are precious things in life.

Wicker trunks and furniture were often made from rattan (a climbing vine from Indonesia), reeds and other strong natural fibers that could withstand a fair amount of wear and tear. 'Wicker' is the term for the product of weaving any number of natural materials and can be traced back thousands of years to the Egyptians, and probably farther. King Tut was buried with several examples of wicker, such as a chair, headboard and a stool. It seems wicker has royal roots.

I hear 'they' are predicting we may get 15 to 20 centimeters of snow Thursday! That works out to about 4 to 8 inches of the white stuff... Yikes!

What better day than today... when we need a little sunshine... to post this large sunflower painting.

Their heads measure approximately 12 inches across, which means that it could feel like you are standing beside a couple of giant sunflowers when you hang these on a wall. If you hang this painting with the bottom sunflower at eye level than the feeling will definitely be like you are in a whimsical garden of magical, mammoth blooms.

Don't we all need a bit of magic in our lives? If I was a fairy-god-mother I would use my magic wand to banish all the snow from Edmonton until next December... Poof!

One of my favorite subjects to paint is a red toned amaryllis, so why not try abstracting it for a change of pace? Yupo has an interesting semigloss finish to it and it is fun to pour, swirl and maneuver the paint on this surface. I created this piece a few years ago and have not gotten around to framing it, maybe this year, will be the year...

I enrolled in some more wonderful art courses at the university this semester... they are so stimulating and rewarding. Sometimes it is difficult to settling down and get to sleep after an evening course because my brain is racing with ideas, but it is too late in the evening to pick up a brush, at least for me it is...

(Yupo paper is a smooth bright white paper that is waterproof like plastic. It is a polymer based product that resists tearing and wrinkling, yet is light weight.)

Have you heard of mauve? Of course you have. But, have you heard of Perkin's Mauve? Maybe not...

Thanks to Henry Perkin we have synthetic dyes, and to be more specific, we have the color mauve (which is often called Perkin's Purple). The proper name is mauve... and here is the story.

In 1856 Henry Perkin was 18 and a student at the Royal College of Chemistry in London, England. He and his fellow students had been looking for a synthetic alternative to quinine (the malaria remedy found only in the bark of a South American tree). His instructor, at the College, had noticed that some of the substances left over from gas lighting were very similar to quinine... and so the experiments began in ernest. Who would be the first to discover a synthetic quinine?

Perkin had a lab set up in the attic of his parent's home. After trying a few experiments he was about to wash out a glass flask when he noticed a black residue. The solution of this blackish residue turned out to be a most beautiful color... and he eventually named it 'Mauve', (which comes from an old french word, which came from the latin word malva... the mallow flower family that is this color).

By 1858 every lady in London, Paris and New York who could afford the new colored fabric was wearing mauve, and this fashion trend made Perkin a very wealthy man before he was 20!

This painting is from a photo I took last week of the mauve ruffles around the top of an antique brown toned dress. I like the abstract feel of this painting, and of course I love the history of mauve coming from Coal Tar.. after all this is Alberta, and we are known for being an oil producer.

Antique clothing has always interested me.

Growing up in rural Ontario, I cultivated an appreciation for antiques in general, from furniture to clothing and everything in between. One of my friends, Mary, lived on a farm in a wonderful old farm house, just down the road from our home (we lived on what Albertans would call an acreage). Her home was a thrill to visit (at least for me it was), because it contained wonderful antique furniture, dishes and clothing... and what made it even more magical was that we were allowed to sit on the furniture, use/play with the dishes and wear the clothing!

Millbrook, the small village situated about a mile down the road, was celebrating its Victorian Heritage, I think the celebration was called 'Frontier Days' and Mary let myself, and a few other girls wear some of the historic clothing so that we could 'dress the part' and promote the celebration. If I remember correctly, I got to wear a grey pin stripped dress with black edging on the collar, and maybe the sleeves and hem... it was probably 100 years old at that time, in the early '70s. It was quite a heavy dress, but I loved wearing it.

The 'Leg Of Mutton Sleeve' in this painting is from a photo I took last week while researching clothing from the 1800's. The actual blouse is linen, and all the little flaws, and stains of age make it all the more precious. The folds and gathers in the fabric have an organic feel and even though this type of sleeve is called 'Leg of Mutton ' because of its similarity to the look of a certain cut of meat... I think it has the feel of a billowing flower bloom...

This study is for something larger I am working on...

I will need to take another photo of this painting... this one has some glare from the (dare I say) 'brighter' day. No, I didn't say sunny day, but the overcast day 'seemed' brighter... anyway, I will take a better shot of this sunflower painting in the morning.

The aqua blue/green background makes them pop off the canvas, giving this painting an almost 3D affect. Click on the photo for a close-up of the impasto sections... rich creamy oil paint passages. The paint was the texture of butter icing, and I almost wanted to lick the brush, but that would be very hazardous to my health, and too much like Van Gogh...

My eyes were craving green yesterday, so I packed up a few art supplies and headed off to Muttart Conservatory for a few hours of photography and sketching. Here in Edmonton we have four glass pyramids, each with its own distinct environment, and plants. The tropical pavilion was my last stop. Luckily, I found a vacant bench in front of a Monstera Plant and staked it out as my own for a few hours while I lost myself in the maze of leaves, trying to keep my attention on the puzzle shapes as I sketched. After a graphite sketch I applied a loose wash of watercolors, and then added some pen and ink cross-hatching to define a few areas. Time flys when you are focused on your work, and before long 2 hours had slipped by...

The humidity in the pavilion felt wonderful on my skin and the greenery made it 'feel' like spring!

Did you know that the color green is often used in decorating for its calming effect because green is thought to relieve stress and help heal. Supposedly those who work in a green work environment experience fewer stomachaches, which leads to the idea of the 'green room' where television guests relax and wait before their appearance on a talk show.

I even read that some students may improve their reading skills by laying a transparent sheet of green paper over reading material. This tool is supposed to increase reading speed and comprehension.

This is a 'high key' painting, which means that it consists of mainly lighter colors.

Our backyard has a weathered grey fence that creates a nice backdrop for my flower garden... especially taller plants and flowers. Delphinium colors, or at least the ones I grow, can be a surprise each summer. I never know what variation of color is going to show up. Some years there is a range of blue, all the way from baby blue to a dark ultramarine. Other years I may find wispy stalks of white blooms with a hint of dusty blue, scattered amongst the lilies; while large dark purple blooms lurk in the corners of the garden... waiting patiently for a bumble bee to happen by.

A stem of blue on grey is the most striking. A lacy branching of delicate blue blooms, bobbing and swaying in a summer breeze... looking demure... waving to everyone.

This studio shot might be called 'Mini Me!'

The smaller 6x12 inch painting called 'Blue Wings' was created first (as a bit of a study) before I painted the larger 12x36 inch version called, 'Blue Wings Too.' Once I completed the larger painting, and stood back for the final view after I signed my name to 'Blue Wings Too', this fun juxtaposition jumped out at me.
There was my smaller 'mini me' daily painting version, overshadowed by the larger gallery version. So, I thought I would share the view, and let you see the size comparison, (and my painting setup).

I was complaining about the snow today... but then I remembered the tragic event in Japan, and realized that the amount of snow we have to deal with is nothing. I cannot imagine the hardships the Japanese people are experiencing since the 9.0 earthquake and tsunami that devastated their country on March 11...

my heart goes out to them.

When this larger Japanese Iris painting sells, I will donate $80.00 of the proceeds to 'The Red Cross' for their relief fund for Japan.

When I painted the smaller version of this Iris, and posted it on March 7, I was doing some research and studying Haiku poetry, and tried my hand at writing a few very simple Haiku poems for some of my paintings. This Japanese Iris reminded me of a dragon fly, and so I composed a simple Haiku poem when I painted the smaller one, and am posting the poem today. I wrote this before the tragedy in Japan, but now my words sound like they are describing the earth, rather than wings...

Yellow and Burgundy Iris are an older, heritage variety that you see in almost every garden here in the Highlands, in Edmonton. I have painted this particular variety from a number of perspectives. It's ruffled upper petals (called 'standards and style arms') have lots of interesting folds and ripples to catch the sunlight, and the orange beard is used as a 'foot hold' (do insects have feet?) for bees to grab onto so they can find their way inside the bloom to drink the nectar.

This little painting could be a conversation starter, but an astute gardener,who had not consumed too much wine at your party, would figure out what it is very quickly.

Who need charades!

Japanese Iris have an interesting shape, and this particular format and perspective showcases this variety's beautiful 'falls', which I think look like blue wings...

Living in a colder part of Canada, I think I really appreciate going to the greenhouse and walking around their 'show gardens' more than if I lived in a warmer climate. Gardening season has a very short life span in Edmonton and gardeners here tend to savour every day that we can enjoy our outdoor floral displays. One garden center I enjoy has a lovely outside 'show' garden, and whenever I am there my camera accompanies me. Snapping a few reference photos, sitting on one of their benches to contemplate the view, plus stopping to smell the flowers along the way, really makes my day.

Where is spring? Sure the sun is shining, and the snow shadows are wonderful shades of lavender/blue... but it stops there. I feel like I live in "Whoville" from The Grinch Stole Christmas.

In order to change my 'Whoville' train of thought I grabbed my brush and painted an Iris, or at least a section of an Iris... I like the way our mind 'fills' in the section not rendered. I am working on some different perspectives of flowers, and this one is a small version of a larger work I am contemplating. Floral paintings really speak to me, and are a large part of who I am as an artist... so I have a few ideas up my sleeve regarding some different perspectives and variation of canvas shape/sizes, which is all tied into my foray into abstraction, or semi-abstraction.

These four, 18x24 inch 'Salt Spring Lavender Field' paintings were purchased yesterday by one collector to be hung side by side on a wall in her home. She mentioned that she previously lived on the west coast of Canada, and is familiar with Salt Spring Island, but has not had a chance to see the lavender fields, so next time she goes to the coast she may just hop on a ferry to Salt Spring and have a look!

I love meeting the people who purchase my paintings... it feels good to make a connection with the person who will now be the owner of some of my art.

These last three postings of abstract paintings were posted a bit backwards... and by that I mean that this one was the first one in the series, and the other two abstracts were created after this painting. Sometimes it is fun to mix things up a bit, in order to make life a little more interesting.

I am about to begin work on some more abstracts... they will be a bit larger than my usual small daily paintings, plus the format of the gallery profile canvas will be different. Small paintings are fun, but as I have mentioned in a few previous blogs it is time to change my focus a bit by creating a few unique pieces (mixed in with the smaller sized canvas), but for now a change is in the air. After I catch up on some 'Design Class' homework this weekend, there will be a flurry of activity in my studio next week, so stay tuned.

My foray into abstraction isn't new, as you can see from these past few posts. Art has the capacity to get us thinking in new directions... let's see where this adventure goes.

Thick texture and rich color...

If you click on the image above it should enlarge, giving you a close-up view of the impasto passages in this abstract painting. Painting, for me, (whether realistic or abstract) is a visual expression of a 'feeling' I receive from my subject matter. When I choose to paint a subject there must be a certain 'feeling' in my body before I proceed with the art. My inspiration is a reaction to the color, light, darkness, texture, shape, meaning, etc of whatever has caught my eye.

When something 'catches my eye', what I really mean is that it has created an 'experience' in my body as well as my mind that (for me) signifies that it would make an interesting painting. We all experience our world in different ways... and we all have our own unique response to the stimuli that surrounds us each day. If we all stopped now and then to analyze what we are feeling about a particular thing... for example a flower, we may be surprised to realize that it is sometimes difficult to articulate. Is it the color, texture, fragrance, or shape that really catches our attention and stimulates our senses, or is it all of these things and more?

One more orange toned abstract... I promise to paint some abstracts in other hues too. The 'orange' energy needs to be expressed first, then the other colors can have centre stage.

This one is also based on a cropped section of tin-foil reflections. Cropping the reference photo is like looking at it under a microscope because it enlarges the new section once you crop it from the original. It comes alive before your eyes! Brilliant... luminescent color.

I have been working with some tin-foil reflections from past reference photos; selecting various sections, then cropping them to create some ' jumping off points ' of inspiration for a few abstract paintings.
Abstract paintings may look easy to execute, but believe me they are not. An artist still needs inspiration... a 'spark' to ignite creativity in order to pick up the brush... plus thoughts about composition, shape, line, color and texture.

Orange is not for the faint of heart. A hot vibrant hue, created by combining red and yellow, orange is filled with energy. The badlands in southern Alberta have a beauty all their own. This is 'dinosaur country', and even though the terrane looked quite different millions of years ago when Albertosaurus and his buddies roamed this part of the earth, it 'feels' like you could see a dinosaur lumber by at any moment.

The reference photo for this painting was taken later in the day as the sun was setting, the late afternoon light revealed the golden orange tones in the rock, and in the 'baby' (beginning to form) hoodoos in the background. The clay underfoot took on a grayed-violet tone, while the silver sage-brush clung to pockets of soil in this desolate landscape.

* (This painting is basically a 'complementary' painting. The orange/ yellows are complements to the blue/violets on the color wheel).

One of my Collectors chose to have the four paintings she purchased from me framed. I took these photos of them hanging in the various locations in her home and thought it might be fun to post them on my blog. There are numerous framing options to choose from if you wish to frame any of my paintings, and it is always nice to see what choices people make.
This Collector picked up another acquisition from me last week, so it will be interesting to see what type of frame she selects for that painting... of course I'll post a photo of that one too, once she lets me know when it is ready for 'viewing'.

It's a strange (and wonderful) feeling for me to see
my work hanging in someone's home. A surreal experience to say the least!

An exotic blood orange differs from a typical orange in color and taste. Some foodies describe the flavor of a blood orange as having a subtle raspberry and/or strawberry taste along with being sweet and mellow. The exotic coloring comes from a pigment called anthocyanin, which can be found in purple and red flowers besides other fruit. Anthocyanin is supposed to have many health benefits. Red delicious apples owe their deep red exterior to the pigment, along with red wine. The color red reminds me of Valentine's Day, and since anthocyanin is good for the heart, (think of the red wine theory) it seems like a good reason to consume something red. So I found a recipe on Martha Stewart for a blood orange cheese cake... now that would be a tasty treat for Valentine's Day.

Tin-foil just might become my second name! Its reflective surface calls out to me from the kitchen as I work upstairs in my studio... tempting me to go down stairs, open the cupboard and look longingly at the huge ( Costco size) box of foil stored on the shelf. Like that commercial on TV, where the box of donuts is calling out to the woman at her desk to come and consume one, or two... our roll of tin-foil is always on my mind. The way it shimmers and shines as it catches the light entices my 'inner crow' to come out and play.

Unlike donuts, tin-foil is calorie free... but I wouldn't recommend eating it!

'Sun Totems' is from a reference photo that I used once previously last fall, and wanted to paint these sunflowers even larger this time. Rather than a square format, I chose a rectangle/landscape, and utilizing my 'artistic license' I changed a few things as I went along. The two photos below shows the small colored sketch that I used for this painting, plus how I drew in the sunflowers using a red/orange toned paint. As I painted, I left bits of the red/orange paint showing here and there for interest, creating a unifying effect, and the rich yellow petals are built up with thick impasto passages of buttery oil paint. These sunflowers are painted life size sun totems, harbingers of autumn...

There is a bit of a glare on the upper right hand side of the main photo (sometimes fresh oil paintings are difficult to photograph).

Dusty Pink Lilies is a cooler toned painting than I usually do, although I have painted this particular vase of soft pink lilies in a larger format a few years ago. Even though I 'say' I prefer vibrant, hot colors, the real truth is I like color in general! Color makes me smile, inside and out.
The color pink is often considered a feminine, romantic color, and along with red, it is the color most connected with 'Valentine's Day.'

Geranium Floral Painting, Burlesque, by Canadian Artist Kim Blair

Have you seen Burlesque? If you like Cher, Christina Aguilera, or great dance movies, then you have to see Burlesque! Fun, colorful costumes along with fabulous singing... just the right thing (besides this painting) to lift your spirits... Yes I know it didn't get great reviews, but who cares... the dancing is great.

At the moment I am listening to the soundtrack from the movie while I write this post, getting up every now and then to dance to the music... and no, not like in the movie... I'd throw my back out doing those moves!

The term Burlesque can be traced back to late Latin, 'burra' (trifle) which is the essence of this type of performance. Campy and exotic, over the top performances... just for fun.

The shape of the geranium leaf in this painting made me think of the wonderful fans used in some dance routines and the hot colored petals are reminiscent of the colorful costumes and makeup... lots of sizzle!

Today was one of those 'wiper' days, lots of work done, but no painting worth keeping. So I started playing around with some of the cool features on our Mac.

Here are some interesting versions of a painting I posted called Avocado on Red.

It's another snowy, overcast day here in Edmonton... so I thought I would paint us all a little bit of sunshine! Sunflowers that make me smile. Whether I look at them in a book, growing in a garden, or displayed in a vase, I feel the corners of my mouth start to curl upwards with happy thoughts.

Van Gogh created numerous sunflower paintings when he moved to Arles, France. The majority of these floral paintings were specifically created to decorate the guest bedroom where his friend, Paul Gauguin would stay while visiting with Van Gogh in the 'Yellow House' in Arles. The special quality of light in the South of France intrigued Vincent, and he wrote to his brother Theo that he loved the amazing brilliance of orange and yellow next to the blue of the sky.

Sometimes I like using a black underpainting so that bits of black paint show up here and there, it reminds me of using the medium of pastels on black paper, which I love the look of, but find I cannot take the chalky dust that they produce. My hat goes off to all the wonderful pastel artists in the blogging world!

Perhaps all the snow and gray days we have been experiencing lately here in Edmonton, have pushed me to want to go back to some vibrant colors... whatever the reason they are back! My niece and her partner, just came back from a week long tropical vacation and they had a wonderful time... just hearing about their trip made me feel like I had been there too! Once you have experienced a tropical destination with sun, sand and surf, it is hard not to 'go there' in your head when someone shares stories of their trip with you.
This pleasant daydreaming/reminiscing is very beneficial because it allows our bodies to re-experience the fun, relaxation and joy all over again, creating a parasympathetic response which can lower our blood pressure, boost our immune system and generally make us feel happier. Maybe we can all save some money by having 'virtual vacations' now and then, although, as the saying goes, "there is nothing like the real thing!"

Inner Beauty XIII: Fringed Beauty, by Canadian Artist Kim Blair

Today I am adding a new addition to my inner beauty series. I have painted this fringed poppy before, and felt it calling to me once again. This particular variety grows in a front yard garden in the community of Riverdale, here in Edmonton.

My mother-in-law used to make a delicious sweet bread that was rolled like a jelly roll with poppy seed paste inside, (plus another one with walnut paste inside). Both sweet treats were devoured very quickly whenever we received a loaf or two from her... of course she had a special way of making it.

Whenever I see any poppy seed strudel for sale at a farmers' market or bake sale, I purchase a loaf for my husband. His eyes light up like a Christmas tree when he sees this special treat, and even though the poppy seed roll will never replace his Mom's baking, he consumes every last morsel all the same... It seems that many Europeans made this type of sweet treat, and I found a recipe for the poppy seed filling just in case you wanted to try it.
As they would say in Austria... Mahlzeit!

A Bit Askew, by Canadian Artist Kim Blair

Propped a bit off center, this avocado is definitely a bit askew. Rich creamy flesh, hugging a fat reddish brown seed, creates a plump piece of fruit that may not stand up straight when leaning against tin foil. This half slid a bit forwards and to the right as I snapped my reference photos, but I liked the way it found its own center of gravity...

I'll pass along one beauty treatment that I read about that is supposed to eliminate under-eye puffiness...
Peel an avocado, remove the pit, and slice a half into 1/4 inch crescents. Lie down, secure a few slices under each eye, and rest for 20 minutes. The result is supposed to be corrective magic!

I may save a few slices from my lunch tomorrow and give it a try...

It isn't tax time yet... but I am already anticipating the need for a 'refreshment' or two, just to get organized, which is why I chose to paint my cork screw.

Actually, I feel pretty proud of myself because last January, I purchase colored file folders and printed labels for each folder to match a line entry on my business tax excel spread sheet, (for example I have a yellow folder with 'postage' printed on it in big bold letters.) Having different colored folders appeals to my love of color and printing the labels in bold, large case letters makes it easy to read.

Then I purchased a 'vertical desk top wire mesh file holder' with 7 deep slots, from Staples, which allows me to fit 3 or 4 folders into each slot. That way I can see everything at a glance, plus have the option to store it upright in a cupboard. Each time I purchase something, or pay a bill, I clip the new receipt to the previous receipts in the appropriate folder, which keeps everything nice and tidy rather than just tossing them into the folder and having to organize each folder later on when I need to add up the receipts... everything takes time and I am all about saving time and steps.

In theory all I have to do is grab one folder at a time, open it, add up all the receipts, then enter that total on the corresponding line on the spread sheet. It all sounds so easy! Once the theory has been put into practice I will report back on how well it went.

Which one do you prefer, red or white? This year my choice is white...

I think this will be the last painting in this Silver on Silver series... at least for a while. (They would great hanging in a kitchen or dinning room, especially if you have a stainless steel stove and or refrigerator.)

The Development of stainless steel by a Sheffield (in England) metallurgist in the 1920s was an important improvement, and is now the standard material for knife blades today. I have noticed on many cooking shows on the Food Network, that each chef seems to have his or her favorite manufacturer for their blade of choice, and I am amazed at the seemingly endless supply of options. And here I thought there was only two knife options... sharp or dull. (only kidding!)

Raise your hand (or fork) if you think I am having fun with this cutlery and tin-foil series!

Setting a table is something most of us do everyday... whether it consists of a knife, fork and spoon is a personal choice. Usually I only set out a knife and fork, leaving the spoon in the cutlery drawer, unless we are having soup, or a saucy food that may require a spoon to scoop up every last delicious morsel. One thing I often switch around is the direction of the knife blade, sometimes I am an 'inny' and sometimes I am an 'outy'.

Fortunately, I do realize the errors of my haphazard ways... and will try to be more consistent with the blade, making sure I am more of an inny since we wouldn't want anyone to cut themselves on a rather dull bread knife, plus you never know when Martha might show up unexpectedly for dinner.

Speaking of Martha Stewart, she has a good tip on how to keep your sterling silverware from tarnishing by sewing up a handy sectioned cutlery bag from special cotton flannel fabric that has been treated with zinc. Check it out here.

Silverware was made from silver for many reasons, but one of the most interesting reasons is that silver is known to have health benefits.

Silver was used during Greek and Roman times to control bodily infection and prevent food spoilage. Hippocrates (know as the Father of Medicine) used silver to heal wounds and the King of Persia used a silver container to carry water to prevent contamination. It was already known in these ancient times that silver was special... before modern germicides and antibiotics, it was known that disease-causing pathogens could not survive in the presence of silver. No wonder silver was (and still is) used for drinking vessels, cutlery and dishes. Just think about the Catholic Church using a silver goblet for the communal communion cup...

Even Pliny the Elder (the Roman Scholar) wrote about the ability of silver to heal wounds by preventing infection. During WWI silver leaf was used to combat infection in wounds, but it was not until the 1970s that silver made a come-back in the medical field. Silver sulphadiazine is now used in the treatment of burn victims to kill invasive burn bacteria and permit wounds to heal.

Cutlery, also known as silverware or flatware was not a regular part of a table setting until the end of the medieval times. It was around this time that the lower classes began to entertain by hosting dinner parties. Previous to this, food was considered to be only a means to an existence. Once it became a reason to socialize, the silversmiths began to create a multitude of utensils decorated with various designs and motifs. The word cutlery can be traced back to its Latin origin 'cultellus' meaning knife. Cutlers was the name given to the men who forged iron knives, so you can see the how the word cutlery came into use, especially since a knife was the most important utensil for thousands of years.

Silver on Silver, Fork Reflections I, by Canadian Artist Kim Blair

Now there is a triptych in my 'silver on silver' cutlery series. Not that they have to sell as a triptych, but they would look fabulous hung together, either side by side, or one above the other. I will try to get some photos of them hanging together in my gallery room once they dry a bit.

The word fork is derived from the Latin 'furca' meaning pitchfork, which is what the early designs resembled. The Fork started out life with two prongs, with origins and dates differing, but for arguments sake 400 BCE seems to be a good starting date. By the Seventh century small forks were used at Middle Eastern Courts and made their way to Italy in about the eleventh century in the dowry of a Byzantine princess who married a Venetian doge.
Thanks to Catherine de Medici (who married Henry I in 1533) the fork made its way across the sea to England. It took a while for it to catch on in Europe. By the late sixteenth century, a period when upper-class Italians expressed renewed interest in cleanliness the fork came into use; yet the French court did not pick it up until the seventeenth century when it was deemed uncivilized to eat meat with both hands.

As the saying goes 'necessity is the mother of invention'... so somewhere between the late seventeenth and the mid-eighteenth century, the tines increased from two, to three, to four, in order to make it a bit easier to consume peas, grains, etc. Plus a little curve to the tines allowed the user to scoop up food, besides spear it.

Now we have forks designed specifically to aid us in serving and consuming almost any food you can think of!

Still Life Painting, Silver on Silver, Knife Reflections I, by Canadian Artist Kim Blair

This 'silver on silver' series is challenging, but it is sharpening my observation skills. My left brain is surrendering to the creative right side, and in the process seems to be enjoying the exercise. But, in order to be fair to both hemispheres I am indulging the left side in some historical research...

During the Middle Ages most people ate with their hands off of slices of four-day old bread. Only the wealthy used knives. Knives were impressive, and among the male nobility there was no better place to show off your talents than to bring along your personal knives to a dinner party and help the women folk cut up their food at the table, when necessary. Two knives were better than one, because then you used one to cut while the other held the meat still. Once it was no longer necessary to spear one's food with the point of a knife, (after the fork came into use) craftsmen began to create knives with blunt ends. I would assume that rowdy banquets would be a bit safer with the sharp knives safely tucked away.

Silver on Silver, Spoon Reflections I, by Canadian Artist Kim Blair

New Years is fast approaching, bringing with it reflections on events of the past 365 days, along with some thoughts on how we might create a few different experiences for ourselves in the year ahead.

Tin foil is a favorite backdrop for me... creating interesting passages of light and reflected color from the objects placed upon it, giving a semi-abstract feel to the painting. This is the first time I have painted silver objects upon a silver background and I must say it was an interesting experience. "Paint what you see", I kept telling myself, not what you "think" you see. Our left brain (the analytical side), loves to overpower our thoughtful creative right brain. The left brain kept telling me to paint silver on silver, because we all know that silverware is silver in color and so is tin foil... but my right brain kept repeating the painters' mantra of "Paint what you see", telling me to really look at the spoons lying on the tin foil and paint all the colors that appeared in the reflected surfaces of each.
Yes, there were many shades of gray, but there were also tints, tones and shades of blue, and orange... reflections from the various objects that surrounded this still life that really created what I was focused on painting.
How many other things in our lives are reflections of what is surrounding us?
One of my new years resolutions is to "Paint what I see, not what I think I see..." in as many areas of my life as possible.

Still Life of Fruit, Pomegranate Wedgies, by Canadian Artist Kim Blair

Pomegranates are one of those festive fruits we associate with winter and especially the holidays. Inside the leathery skin is a treasure trove of ruby red flesh covered seeds which can add sparkle to any salad. Last year some Foodie Friends introduced us to 'Pomegranate Molasses'... it was love at first taste! Pomegranate syrup would be a better name for this nectar from the gods, but molasses will have to do. I often add about a 1/2 tsp or so, to any vinegarette salad dressing I make, but after doing some research on the web, I noticed that you can supposedly replace the vinegar with the pomegranate molasses like this 'recipe' I found.
While perusing the web I also came across a few meat dishes using pomegranate molasses that I am going to try over the holidays, one is with Pork Tenderloin and the other one is with Chicken. Here in Edmonton you can find pomegranate molasses at the Italian Centre Store, but I am sure that it is available at many ethnic or specialty stores since it is popular in Middle Eastern cuisine.
